Sacral Chordoma Tumor

Sacral chordoma is a rare, slow-growing malignant primary bone tumor that originates from vestigial remnants of the embryonic notochord. It most commonly occurs in adults between the ages of 40 and 60, with a higher prevalence in men. Because these tumors grow slowly and often present with non-specific symptoms like lower back pain, they are frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage.

Key Characteristics and Symptoms

As the most common primary malignant tumor of the sacrum, it accounts for approximately 50% of all chordoma cases.

Common Symptoms:

Lower back or tailbone pain, which typically worsens when sitting and may not respond well to over-the-counter pain medication. Neurological changes, such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs and buttocks.

Bowel and bladder dysfunction, including constipation or urinary retention, caused by the tumor pressing on sacral nerve roots. Visible lump in the sacral or gluteal region in some advanced cases.
